Mr. Debraj Raychand is the 17th descendant of Maharaja Krisnachandra Roy. Maharaja Krisnachandra Roy(1710-1783) was Zamindar of Nadia, heir to Bhabananda Majumder , founder of the aristocratic family of Krishnanagar. Maharaja Krisnachandra Roy was shrewd and politically farsighted.Debraj Raychand has carried on this politics for generations through his political work and business.Krishnachandra was "the most important man of the period in the Hindu society of Bengal." He is credited not only with his resistance to the Mughal rule, but with his expansion of and patronage of the arts in his kingdom. King Krishnachandra allied himself with the British during the change of political position. And together with Robert Clive, Siraj ud-Daulah played a key role in bringing down the regime. Nawab Mir Qasim King Krishnachandra was imprisoned and sentenced to death during the conflict with the British. With the help of the British, King Krishnachandra was released from prison and the death penalty. As a result of his loyalty to British rule, he was given the title of Raychand by the British. The British also declared him Maharaja. Raja Krishnachandra is credited with popularising the saradiya Durgotsava (Durga puja festival) in the form in which it exists today in West Bengal.
